It turns out that there are a great deal of resources available for sex addicts, porn addicts and spouses of addicts. There are therapists, inpatient programs, outpatient programs, intensives, groups, workshops, meetings, websites, apps, books, you name it, it’s probably out there.
Almost everything costs money though. The few things that I have found that don’t cost money are the Anonymous groups (SAA, SLA, SA, etc); they do ask that members donate, but it’s not a must, but it is considered proper. I try and stick something, anything from a dollar to five dollars, into the dish for every meeting I go to.
Now the reason I bring this up is that I was spending sometime exploring some different websites I had just heard about and posted on my ‘Other Sites to Check Out’ page. I explored XXXChurch.com in detail as well as Fortify Program and Strength to Fight. This is just a small sample set, I grant you, but eventually there come’s a fee or a price with everything. I was actually kind of turned off by XXXChurch’s pricing model and blatant marketing for X3Watch and X3Groups. Especially with tiered pricing and the like. I also was initially interested in their My Pilgrimage video series until I realized it was $499 for a single payment or 3 payments of $199.
The Fortify Program is free to people under 21 and $39 for adults (one time fee). They use the cost they charge adults to subsidize the under 21 crowds. I do respect that.
I’ve talked to this coach
Coach twice now. A little over an hour the first time and just under an hour today. Today I brought up how does he make money doing this? Turn’s out that he charges $75/hr for coaching, $75 CAD so that’s only $55.58 USD which is really pretty damn cheap. Coach is also going to do this for a week with me for no charge and then we shall see how it goes, that’s pretty nice of him actually.
Anyways, the point that I’m trying to make is that it’s very hard to get help without money. It’s not impossible, but it’s difficult to get really good, high quality help with a really good source of income or some really great benefactors. My two weeks at PCS were over $13,000 for therapy and then another ~$2,500 for lodging, never mind the cost to get out there and back. PCS does have a New Hope Foundation, started by Ralph Earle, that grants scholarships to people who can’t afford to go on their own.
I’m a guy who’s used to being in the top 5% if not higher of all income earners in the US. I’ve come down a few pegs, actually a lot of pegs recently and have ton of personal debt and don’t even have an income right now. Now where all my money went, I only have some ideas, a lot I can’t even speak to; so I’m really the last person who should be lamenting the cost of good help.
But… I’m going to do it anyways.
It’s sad that life is this expensive, that only the privileged few should be able to obtain quality help and support. I hope that someday soon we can get to this point of Star Trek and the cashless society. Till that day comes, I think I’m truly beginning to believe in the idea of a Universal Basic Income. I’m not a socialist, although I did grow up in Canada. I am a capitalist and most recently worked in Investment Banking and have worshipped the almighty dollar.
Everyone should enjoy be able to enjoy a basic quality of life and health care should be a right, not a privilege.
